What Makes A Good Dog Bed
A hard floor makes a good bed for some dogs. For some, it’s anywhere beside their parents. But, generally, a good dog bed has the following features:
Great cushioning.
Older dogs are more likely to develop joint disorders such as Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis. If your dog has it, a dog bed with good cushioning can support dogs’ essential joints when they sleep and can provide relief from pain.
Gives a good night’s sleep.
Adult dogs need around 12-14 hours of sleep per day. Puppies need around 17-20 hours. Like humans, dogs get cranky and restless when they don’t get enough sleep. If this continues, their risk of long-term health problems increases as well as their stress levels.
A spot for relaxation.
Dogs are den animals. Like humans, they need a safe and secure space where they can go when they are stressed, like a “home away from home”.
Encourages your dog to sleep in its own bed.
Dogs have different sleeping needs. If you have a puppy, it’s best to let her sleep with you on your bed and wait until she’s old enough before you change her sleeping spot. Otherwise, if you have a senior dog and you’re having trouble sleeping, a dog bed is necessary to get your dog to sleep in its own bed.
Chew-proof.
Dogs are natural chewers. They explore the world through their mouths. This is why making your home puppy proof is important, and it starts with making your dog bed chew-proof. This can also cut out (unexpected) out-of-pocket medical expenses due to ingestion of foreign objects or poisoning which can be very expensive without pet insurance.
Easily cleaned & washable.
Dogs do most of their stuff on their bed. They munch on their treats, wipe their dirt, saliva and sweat on their bed. Some who have not been potty-trained pee and defecate on the bed. And, some dogs eat their shit, and even if that does not cause any harm, that’s still gross. Also, maintaining an adequate level of cleanliness is a must to avoid the spread of germs and prevent your dog from getting allergies.
Stuffing & Filling Options
There are many stuffing and filling options out there. You can actually find some around your house! The popular ones are:
Solid Foam Mattress.
If your dog is suffering from Hip Dysplasia, arthritis, and other similar medical conditions, a solid foam mattress is the way to go. This material is used in commercial orthopedic beds along with a polyester to make it super soft and comfortable.
Make sure it’s at least 7 inches thick if you’re gonna make an orthopedic style bed. Thicker foam are better for larger dogs as it distributes weight more evenly than thin ones. The latter is ideal for small dogs and puppies.
Polyester Fiber Fill.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive filler for your dog with sensitivities or allergies, go for Polyester Fiber Fill. It’s hypoallergenic and usually made of natural materials like natural latex foam, horse hair and plant-based materials.
It’s a good insulator as well and would keep your dog warm in cold season and weather. The only disadvantage of this kind of filling is that it clump up after a few washings.
Best Polyester Fiber Fillings for Dog Beds
Cedar Shavings.
This filling gives out a pleasing fragrance that can repel fleas, moths and other insects. This may not be a good filling option however if your dog has a sensitive nose. If that is the case and you still want your dog bed to have cedar shavings, you can enclose it in a bag and put it inside a layer of other fillers. Observe your dog and see how he’s gonna react to it.
Fleece.
Traditionally, fleece are made from sheep’s wool. It’s very lightweight and soft to touch. Modern fleece has same texture but made from polyester fabric and/or recycled plastic bottles. This type of filling is breathable and has good insulation- a great option if you want something to keep your furry pet warm during winter and cold weathers. You can also use this as a cover if you prefer a no sew dog bed.
Traditional Fillers.
Traditional fillers like hair, feathers, rags, sand, bed covers and clothes had been the go-to filling option of pet parents long before synthetic materials like polyester had been available in the market.
Each traditional filler has its advantages and disadvantages. If you’re looking for something that is simple and already available in your house, try old clean rags, t-shirts, sweaters and bed covers. Just make sure that they are safe and not potential choking hazards.
Recycled Bed Pillow.
This is your best option if you want something that is simple, inexpensive and easy to clean. Like humans, dogs have their own preferences. So, if you plan to use one, make sure you use your dog’s favorite pillow.
Dog Bed Care
- Follow the cleaning/care instruction if it is available.
- Use a vacuum to remove hair, dirt and other debris before washing. If you do not have a vacuum, use a brush or any available item that can remove the debris.
- Most pillows with down, feather, cotton and fiber stuffing can be put in a washing machine. But, use warm water and mild and pet-safe detergent, and do not include other pieces of clothing to avoid damage. Use cold water to wash the fleece.
- Air-dry to give it a fresh clean smell.
- Make sure to hang your cover and fillers in a well-ventilated spot to prevent mildew and molding.
Why Make A Dog Bed?
Well, there’s nothing sweeter than making a homemade dog bed for your furry best friend. This might not be true for dogs but don’t you love it when you receive a homemade creation or gift on your birthday, more so on a random day from a friend? You do, for sure! Time and effort mean more than anything money could buy.
Besides that, it’s eco-friendly. Recycling old bed pillows, rags, pieces of clothing and other old stuff to make a dog bed reduce wastes and carbon footprint. Also, it saves money!
And, to save time, we came up with a no sew dog bed that you can finish in 10 minutes or less, and only requires a few materials! But before that, let’s talk about the different types of dog beds.
How to Make a Dog Bed Without Sewing
No sew dog bed is easy and only require a few materials: bed fillers, cover, and scissors. In this tutorial, we will use a soft bed pillow for our filler and 2 pieces of printed fleece for our cover. If you do not have fleece, any wool clothing will work just fine.
Make sure the bed pillow is the right size for your dog! The size of the fleece should be 4″ (vertically and horizontally) larger than the bed pillow. If you have a 24″ x 34″ bed pillow, the fleece should be 28″ x 38″.
Step 1:
Find a space with a level surface- a table or kitchen floor will do as long as you can lay out your fleece. Start by laying out your fleece. Make sure the printed side are facing out.
Step 2:
Using a scissors, cut approximately 3″ into the fleece at 1″ apart. Cut all sides to the same length and width. Use a ruler and marker if necessary.
Step 3:
When you’re done with step 3, tie the 2 pieces of fleece together. Double the knots to make it more tight. Place the bed pillow inside before you tie the last side. Loosen your knot on this one so you can untie the cover when you need to wash it.
Step 4:
Have your dog try his new bed!
Conclusion
See, it’s easy peasy! You can use other fillers and covers. Just make sure that they’re safe and won’t cause any potential health effects on your dog- Let your dog’s reaction and sleeping patterns be your guide. But, we hope your dog will like his now sew dog bed. If your dog still prefers to sleep on the floor or beside you, then let your dog be. Many studies have proven that having a furry companion to sleep beside you can be good for the both of you!
